Ashes to the Ocean

"Ashes to Ocean"- Excellent

The Ashes to the Oceans experience that Hans provided for myself and family was of excellent quality.  He was kind, funny and understanding throughout the difficult day.  We laid my stepdads ashes to rest near a small island just off of  Nanaimo.  It was the perfect way to celebrate his life. Hans had some very lovely suggestions, such as scattering petals (some of which he even brought himself), to music options, etc.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a sea burial.  It was a really  unique way to celebrate someones life. "

This is a popular and affordable way to say farewell, honour and disburse your loved ones ashes, in the beautiful waters surrounding Nanaimo from the peace and comfort of the Catamaran Shadowfax.

The service can either be attended with up to 12 people or unattended.

Suggested length of service is 1.5 hours.

It can be done in either daylight or evening hours.

All  faiths welcome.

Disbursement areas are numerous and we can be quite flexible as per location.  All locations are close to the main Nanaimo  shore or adjacent islands.  We find a calm area to ensure a comfortable service and usually try to turn off the motor, put it on the quiet electric mode or put up some sail.  The only sound is nature, wind and waves.

Often an area can be chosen where the boat ceremony  can be viewed from  shore.  This is a place  where more family or friends - who do not fit on the boat -  can gather and can see the actual boat ceremony from a distance  and a place where family or friends can go in the future, on their own, and remember  their loved ones.  Areas chosen previously have been Neck Point or Pipers Lagoon  beaches.  At times friends have gathered around the boat in kayaks and took part in the dispersal in that way.

For evening or night services, the moon, city and harbor lights and reflections add to the beauty of the ceremony.

Once on station you can perform a ceremony - of your own choice.

Music can be played or honour can be shown in silence.

We do have Bluetooth capabilities if you have your own music; if not we can play appropriate background music.

Distributing bags of loose flower petals, along with the ashes,  is a beautiful addition to the ceremony and highly recommended.

After the disbursement we try to cruise a short time, near the disbursement area, watching the ashes and flower petals gently spread throughout the area, and then slowly motor back to the marina.   We try to truly make it a a time.  Participants usually bring along snacks or refreshments to toast or enjoy.

Bring along snacks and refreshments for your family, friends and guests.

In the following section are scripts that have been used by others or myself for these types of occasions.  They are not faith or religion specific but are only shared to give you some examples that others have used.   I welcome your suggestions to share here.

Examples of scripts and dedications that have been used:

"That day, which you fear as being the end of all things, is the birthday of your eternity."

"In Memory of (name of departed) we make way toward our final destination, drifting silently through this sea of life, and return now to our beginning."

"We speak your name

with love and pride.

We smile with tears

we cannot hide.

We thank you for

the years we shared,

The love you gave

the way you cared.

Forever in our heart,

We love and miss you."

"Today we assemble here on the ocean to bid farewell to .........wife, husband, son, daughter, father, mother... of ....and life brother/sister to us all.  In keeping with .......wishes, we will keep this ceremony brief."

Sample Opening Verse:

When you speak of her/him, speak not with tears, for thoughts of her/him should not be sad.  Let memories of the times you shared give you comfort, for her/his life was rich because of you..

"Do not stand at this place and weep, I am not here, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am he gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am that swift uplifting rush.

Of quiet birds in circling flight, I am the stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at this place and cry, I am not here, I did not die."

...More...:

"Death is nothing at all.  I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are.  Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way you always used.   Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced solemnity or sorrow.  Laugh as we always laughed  at the little jokes we enjoyed together.  Pray, smile, think of me. pray for me.

Let my name be the household word that is always was. Let it be spoken without affect, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant.  It is the same as it ever was; there is unbroken continuity.  Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?  I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.  All is well."

Sample Dedication Verses:

"Don't grieve for me, for now I am free, as I follow the path God laid for me.

I took his hand when I heard him call, then turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found my peace at the close of day.

My life's been full, I've savored much, good friends, good times, and a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don't lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your hearts and peace to thee, I'm with God now, he has set me free."

Another example:

"Though we need to weep your loss/You dwell in that safe place in our hearts/Where no storm or night or pain can reach you.

Sample Conclusion and Final Blessing;

"I now call upon ..., to come forward and commit ......remains to the four winds and the ocean's tide.  In doing so we remember .... in life, and we take solace and comfort in the knowledge that his/her journey here is now complete, as he/she embarks upon a new voyage that will carry him/her to a peaceful and eternal rest."

"Today we have said farewell to our friend/brother/son/daughter/sister in life (name of departed).  May the journey he/she has just embarked upon, bring his/her safely to the shores of paradise.

Bow heads for finally blessing please.

This blessing is taken from ST. Paul's Second letter to the Corinthians 13:11-14: will always be with you.

Finally, brothers, good-bye.  Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal.

Be of one mind, live in peace, and the God of love and peace

will always be with you.

Greet one another with a holy kiss, for all the saints send their greetings.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,

And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

Be with you all.  AMEN..

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy

Spirit, AMEN."
